How many municipalities does Colombia have?
According to the DANE Geoportal – Divipola (checked 23 Sep 2026), Colombia has 1,103 municipalities, 18 non-municipalized areas (ANM) and 32 departments, plus the Capital District of Bogotá.
Municipality vs non-municipalized area (ANM)
A municipality is the basic territorial entity with a mayor and a council. A non-municipalized area (ANM) is not a municipality: it is a division used in some departments (for example in parts of the Amazon) where there is no municipality constituted in the same way. For the school count of “municipalities of Colombia” the Divipola municipality figure is used; ANM are not counted as municipalities.

Note: Bogotá D.C. is not a department and is not counted as a municipality of Cundinamarca. The 32 departments add up to 1,102 municipalities; Bogotá D.C. is municipality 1,103, as Capital District. San Andrés y Providencia has 1 municipality in Divipola (Providencia): San Andrés is typed as an island, not a municipality, and is not part of the 1,103.
How municipalities are organized within a department
Within each department, municipalities are usually listed in alphabetical order. Some departments are also grouped into provinces or subregions to make lookup easier (such as the 15 provinces of Cundinamarca). Those groupings help study geography, but they do not always have the same legal recognition as the municipality.
