Valle del Cauca is one of the most important departments in the country and is located between the Andean and Pacific regions. Its capital is Santiago de Cali.

Its capital is Santiago de Cali.

It borders the north with Chocó and Risaralda, the east with Quindío and Tolima, the south with Cauca and the west with Chocó and the Pacific Ocean.

It is the second most populous department in Colombia and has the Isla de Malpelo under its jurisdiction.

The name of the department is due to the Valley of the Cauca River or High Valley, located between the Central and Western Cordilleras, where the first cities of the department were founded.

HISTORY

The Cauca Valley was formed after the union of the departments of Cali and Buga, which in a gathering of the time met Manuel Buenaventura, Francisco Magallán, and Manuel Caicedo to agree on the union of the two provinces in one that would have Cali as the capital, they raised their request for establishment before the congress under decree Nº 340 and this desire was crystallized on April 16, 1910, during the presidency of Ramón González Valencia thus the foundation of the new department was officially established and its first governor was Pablo Borrero Ayerbe.

RELIEF

This department is crossed by the Western and Central mountain ranges, it has a tropical rainforest towards the Pacific and a fertile and large valley of 250 km long by 150 wide, two large bays stand out, La Málaga and La de Buenaventura.

In the Western mountain range, the most known are the Farallones de Cali with 4200 meters of height.

CLIMATE

It is a zone that has a temperate climate that facilitates the cultivation of any product and the average temperature is 23°C.

HYDROGRAPHY

There are numerous rivers there that go from the Pacific such as the Dagua, Anchicaya and the Naya but the most important is the Cauca that passes through the department from south to north and allows minor navigation.

ECONOMY

The Vallecaucana agriculture is the most varied and therefore it is one of the most important in the country; there is a large number of sugar mills that not only supply the country but also export to other countries.

They produce rice, cotton, cacao, tobacco.

It is the only department that produces wine and the fourth in coffee production. The cattle ranching is technified. The coal mines of the summit supply Cali in the industrial zone.
