Municipalities of Santander

Complete list of the 87 municipalities of Santander in alphabetical order, by population, climate and founding date. All the information of each municipality.

The department of Santander belongs to the Andean region of Colombia, being one of the roughest, most heroic and spectacular territories in the country. Its steep mountains, deep canyons and mighty rivers such as the Chicamocha and Sogamoso sculpted a landscape that forged the brave and independent character of the Santanderean people, known for having originated the Comunero movement of 1781, one of the first antecedents of Latin American independence. Bucaramanga, its capital, is today one of the most modern cities with the best quality of life in Colombia, while municipalities such as Barichara, San Gil and Girón are colonial gems of national and international recognition. The 87 municipalities of Santander distributed across its seven provinces offer everything from the freezing climates of the páramo to the heat of the Chicamocha canyon and the jungles of the Magdalena Medio. Below you will find the complete list in alphabetical order, by population, climate and founding date.

MUNICIPALITIES OF SANTANDER NEAR BUCARAMANGA

The Bucaramanga Metropolitan Area is one of the four legally constituted metropolitan areas in Colombia. Made up of Bucaramanga, Floridablanca, Girón and Piedecuesta, this region is home to more than one million inhabitants and is considered one of the urban areas with the best quality of life in the country. Its geography is peculiar: the plateau where Bucaramanga sits is surrounded by ravines and canyons that make the territory an urban puzzle integrated by the four municipalities. Floridablanca is the second most populated municipality in Santander, while Girón preserves its colonial historic center and Piedecuesta has become a hub for technological and agricultural development.
