The oldest municipality in Valle del Cauca is Buga, founded on July 9, 1555 by the conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar, today known as the Ciudad Señora and home of the Sanctuary of the Lord of the Miracles, one of the most important religious pilgrimage sites in Colombia. The Cali Metropolitan Area is the most important conurbation in southwestern Colombia. Formally integrated by Cali, Yumbo, Jamundí, Palmira and Candelaria, this area concentrates nearly three million inhabitants and is the great industrial, commercial and cultural engine of the Colombian Pacific. Yumbo stands out as the largest industrial hub, Palmira as the agro-industrial sugar heartland, while Jamundí and Candelaria have become residential and logistics municipalities that are growing rapidly due to the expansion of Cali.
