The department of Vaupés belongs to the Amazon region of Colombia and is one of the most remote, least populated and least known departments in the entire country. With an area of 54,135 km² and a population that does not exceed 45,000 inhabitants, Vaupés has a density of barely 0.8 inhabitants per km², one of the lowest in the world. Its capital, Mitú, is the only departmental capital in Colombia that does not have land access; to get there you must take a flight from Bogotá or Villavicencio, or navigate the Vaupés River for several days. The department is a megadiverse territory where 97% of the surface is intact Amazon rainforest, and it is home to more than 25 indigenous peoples such as the Cubeo, Desano, Tucano, Wanano and Piratapuyo, guardians of languages and traditions that survive in one of the last great lungs of the planet.

DATE OF FOUNDATION OF MUNICIPALITIES OF VAUPÉS
The formal presence of the Colombian State in the territory of Vaupés is relatively recent. Mitú was founded in 1936 by Jesuit missionaries who established a mission at the confluence of the Vaupés River. For decades it was merely a corregimiento or special commissariat, until with the 1991 Constitution Vaupés was elevated to the category of department. Carurú and Taraira are also young municipalities whose formal categorization was consolidated during the 20th century. Complete list:

MUNICIPALITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF VAUPÉS
The 3 municipalities of Vaupés concentrate almost all of its population, although the territory is dotted with small indigenous communities scattered along the Vaupés, Papurí, Querarí and Cuduyarí rivers. Access between municipalities is by river or by air using small aircraft, as there is no road connecting them. The department's economy is basically subsistence-based for indigenous communities, supplemented by some ecotourism projects, handicrafts and sustainable forest use. Vaupés shares a border with Brazil to the south and east, with relations with Brazilian populations being a daily element in the lives of its inhabitants. The territory is home to 10% of all freshwater fish species in the world, making the Vaupés River one of the most biodiverse aquatic ecosystems on the planet.
