Municipalities of Amazonas
Complete list of the 2 municipalities of Amazonas in alphabetical order, by population, climate and founding date, all the information of each municipality.
The department of Amazonas belongs to the Amazon region of Colombia and is the largest department in the country with 109,665 km², equivalent to almost the entire surface of South Korea. However, despite its vastness, Amazonas has only 2 municipalities: Leticia and Puerto Nariño, in addition to several departmental corregimientos that administer the indigenous communities scattered throughout the jungle. The department shares borders with Brazil and Peru, and the city of Leticia — its capital — coexists practically continuously with the Brazilian city of Tabatinga. In Amazonas, more than 30 indigenous peoples live, including the Tikuna, Huitoto, Yagua, and Cocama, who preserve their ancestral traditions in one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. The Amazon River crosses the southern end of the department, being the river with the largest flow in the world.

DATE OF FOUNDATION OF MUNICIPALITIES OF AMAZONAS
The history of settlements in Amazonas is relatively recent in terms of organized towns, as the jungle was inhabited by indigenous communities for millennia before the arrival of missionaries and explorers. Leticia was founded in 1867 by the Peruvian military officer Manuel Carvajal Valenzuela as part of the territorial disputes in the Amazon Trapezoid, and was definitively ceded to Colombia through the Salomón-Lozano Treaty in 1922. Puerto Nariño was founded in 1961 as a corregimiento and elevated to municipality in 1984, being recognized today as one of the most sustainable municipalities in the country due to its model of ecotourism and community development. MUNICIPALITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF AMAZONAS
Amazonas is the only department in Colombia that, despite being the largest in the country, has only 2 municipalities. The rest of the territory is organized into departmental corregimientos such as La Chorrera, La Pedrera, El Encanto, Puerto Alegría, Puerto Arica, Puerto Santander, La Victoria, and Tarapacá, which are home to important indigenous communities but do not have the administrative status of municipalities. Leticia, the capital, is the southernmost city in Colombia and is primarily accessed by air from Bogotá or by the Amazonas river. Puerto Nariño, 90 km upstream from Leticia, is a model of sustainable tourism where motorized vehicles do not circulate and mobility is on foot or by canoe. The exuberant Amazonian biodiversity —with jaguars, pink dolphins, anacondas, and thousands of bird species— makes this department a world-class nature destination.
