The department of Meta belongs to the Orinoquía region of Colombia, a region of immense plains, mighty rivers, and extraordinary biodiversity. Its capital, Villavicencio, is known as the Gateway to the Plains and acts as the economic and cultural epicenter of the entire eastern region of the country. DATE OF FOUNDATION OF MUNICIPALITIES OF META
The municipality of San Martín is the oldest in the department of Meta, founded in 1585 by Augustinian missionaries as a mission point in the piedmont, becoming one of the earliest colonial settlements in eastern Colombia.

MUNICIPALITIES OF META NEAR VILLAVICENCIO
Villavicencio, as the capital of the department and main city of eastern Colombia, concentrates several municipalities around it that form an area of direct influence. This piedmont area is the most populated and developed in the department, with paved roads and high connectivity with Bogotá. The municipalities closest to Villavicencio form a productive and agro-industrial corridor of great importance for the plains economy.
