DATE OF FOUNDATION OF MUNICIPALITIES OF NORTE DE SANTANDER
The municipality of Pamplona is the oldest in the department of Norte de Santander, founded on November 1, 1549 by Pedro de Ursúa and Ortún Velasco. It was one of the most important cities of the New Kingdom of Granada and a starting point for the colonization of much of the eastern plains.

Cúcuta and its neighboring municipalities form the Cúcuta Metropolitan Area, one of the most important in Colombia due to its strategic position on the border with Venezuela.
