The department of Arauca belongs to the Orinoquía region, in the northeastern tip of Colombia, bordering Venezuela. With an area of almost 24,000 km², this department bears the same name as its capital and main river: the Arauca, a tributary of the Orinoco. The Arauca territory stretches between the foothills of the Eastern mountain range and the vastness of the Venezuelan plains, with a mixed cultural identity that combines indigenous, colonial, and plains traditions. Despite being one of the departments with the fewest municipalities —only 7—, Arauca concentrates significant oil reserves and a natural and cultural wealth that makes it unique in Colombian geography.
