The department of Vaupés has a warm and humid equatorial climate, one of the most stable and rainy in Colombia. Mitú, its capital, is at 240 meters above sea level and records temperatures of 25 to 28 °C throughout the year, with relative humidity permanently above 85%. Rainfall is abundant and distributed throughout the year, exceeding 3,000 mm annually. Vaupés is part of the Guiana Shield, with ancient rock outcrops, rapids and blackwater rivers like the Vaupés River (or Uaupés). Indigenous presence is predominant: more than 70% of the department's population is indigenous, and the Amazon rainforest climate profoundly shapes traditional ways of life.

RAINY AND DRY SEASONS IN VAUPÉS

It rains all year. Rainiest season: April–October. Relatively dry period: November–March. Mitú receives 3,200–3,800 mm annually. The rapids of the Vaupés River are accessible in any season, but are more impressive in the rainy season when the flow is at its maximum.

BEST TIME TO VISIT VAUPÉS

November–February: relatively less rain, better river access to indigenous communities. For the Vaupés rapids in all their splendor: June–August. Access to the department is only by air from Bogotá, meaning weather conditions affect flight frequency.
