The department of Amazonas has a warm and humid equatorial climate, characteristic of the Amazon rainforest. Leticia, its capital and only municipality in the department, is at 83 meters above sea level on the triple border with Peru and Brazil, and records temperatures of 25 to 30 °C throughout the year with high relative humidity. Leticia is the heart of Colombian Amazon ecotourism and the starting point for exploring the most biodiverse rainforest on the planet. The Amazon River, which flows past Leticia, has seasonal rises and falls that transform the landscape: in the high season the river rises up to 12 meters above its low-water level, flooding the forest and creating the flooded forests called igapó and várzea.

RAINY AND DRY SEASONS IN AMAZONAS
It rains almost all year. Rainy season: March–August (Amazon River at its highest level, June–July). Low water season: September–February (river at its lowest, December–January: Amazon sand beaches visible). Leticia receives 2,800–3,500 mm annually.

BEST TIME TO VISIT AMAZONAS
June–August: Amazon River at high levels, flooded forests, piranha fishing in igapó, canoe excursions under the rainforest canopy. December–January: low waters, Amazon sand beaches, pink dolphin sightings, better forest hikes. Both seasons are valid depending on the experience sought.
