Tourism in Guaviare — Caño Cristales of the Plains and Mountain Range

Guaviare is one of the most impressive ecotourism destinations in Colombia, a transition territory between the Amazon, the Llanos and the Guiana Shield, where quartzite tepuis, colorful rivers, virgin jungle and 12,000-year-old rock paintings coexist in a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Its capital, San José del Guaviare, is the starting point for exploring the Serranía de La Lindosa, with its unique rock formations and stone tunnels painted by the first inhabitants of the Americas.

Guaviare's great secret is that it houses part of the same ecosystem that made Caño Cristales famous in Meta: rivers with multicolored algae (Macarenia clavigera) that paint the riverbed red, yellow, green and blue between June and November. The department has 4 municipalities and has only been open to tourism for a few years, guaranteeing authenticity and low crowding at attractions.

Fermented plantain chicha is the drink of indigenous communities.
