Medellín Flower Fair — Silleteros Parade

Everything about the Medellín Flower Fair: Silleteros Parade, Classic Car Parade, dates, events, how to get there, and where to stay in August.

The Medellín Flower Fair is the most emblematic festival in Antioquia and one of Colombia's most important tourist events. It takes place each year during the first week of August in Medellín and its surroundings, with the Silleteros Parade as its crowning event: hundreds of farmers from Santa Elena carry monumental flower arrangements — called silletas — on their backs in a tradition that has been proposed for UNESCO recognition.

The fair was born in 1957 as a celebration of Antioquian identity and Medellín's flourishing. Today it lasts ten days with over 500 events including the Classic and Antique Car Parade, the Horse Parade (Cabalgata), free concerts at Parque de los Deseos, and the Tango Festival. With over 3 million attendees, it is the most-attended city festival in the country.

Dates and Duration

The Flower Fair is held for ten days during the first week of August. The Silleteros Parade — the main event — always takes place on the first Sunday of August. Check the official Medellín city government calendar for exact dates each year.

The Silleteros of Santa Elena

The silleteros are flower-growing farmers from the township of Santa Elena, in the mountains east of Medellín. The tradition of the silletas originates from the wooden chairs that farmers used to carry flowers to market on their backs. Today, silletas are floral works of art that can weigh up to 80 kilograms and take weeks to prepare. There are four competitive categories: emblematic (at least 50 different flowers), artistic (depicts an image or message), traditional (classic design), and children's.

How to Get to Medellín

Medellín has the José María Córdova Airport (MDE) in Rionegro, 40 minutes from downtown. Direct flights from Bogotá (50 min), Cali (50 min), Barranquilla (1 h), and Cartagena (1 h). To get around the city: the Medellín Metro (the country's only metro line), the Ayacucho tram, and aerial cable cars connect all key points.

Where to Stay

El Poblado is the tourist neighborhood par excellence: boutique hotels, gourmet restaurants, bars, and intense nightlife. Laureles is quieter and more local, with good dining options and parks. Downtown offers budget options near the metro. During the fair, prices rise 30–50% — book at least 2 months in advance.

Practical Tips

  • For the Silleteros Parade, arrive at least 2 hours early to Avenida El Poblado to get a good spot.
  • The Medellín Metro is the fastest and safest way to get around during the fair — avoid traffic.
  • August in Medellín has rainy afternoons: bring an umbrella or light rain jacket.
  • Visit the Santa Elena township the day before the parade to see silleteros preparing their silletas.
  • Try bandeja paisa, mondongo, and arepas de chócolo at Mercado del Río or park stalls.
