Tourism in Meta — Caño Cristales and Llanos Orientales
Tourism guide to Meta: Caño Cristales (the most beautiful river in the world), Villavicencio, Sierra de La Macarena National Park, Orinoquía plains and llanero cuisine.
Meta is the closest department to Bogotá with Llanos Orientales landscapes and one of the most extraordinary nature destinations in Colombia. Its capital, Villavicencio, is the gateway to the Llanos —just 86 km from Bogotá via the Llano highway— and home to a vibrant llanero culture with joropo, coleo and mamona cuisine. But Meta's great treasure is 10 hours from the capital: Caño Cristales, the river of five colors, called the most beautiful river in the world.
Caño Cristales, in the Sierra de La Macarena National Natural Park, turns intense red due to the aquatic alga Macarenia clavigera between June and November, creating a unique phenomenon on the planet: a river that appears painted with yellow, red, green, blue and black colors in its pools, waterfalls and stone beds. The department has 29 municipalities and a biodiversity that includes the clearest river in Colombia, Amazon rainforest and llanero savanna.
Main Tourist Attractions
| Attraction | Type | Description |
| Caño Cristales | Nature / Wonder | The most beautiful river in the world, according to National Geographic and CNN Travel. Between June and November the alga Macarenia clavigera dyes the river red, yellow, green, blue and black. Pools like Ojo de Cristal, Aguajal and El Punto are the most photographed. Only accessible from La Macarena on 2-4 hour guided walks. |
| Sierra de La Macarena National Natural Park | Ecotourism / Jungle | Confluence zone of four ecosystems: Amazon, Orinoquía, Andes and Guianas. Exceptional biodiversity: 550 bird species, 1,200 plants, 200 mammals. The Güejar River canyon, the mountain range's tepuis and the blue-colored lagoons complete the offering. |
| Villavicencio — Capital of the Plains | City / Culture | The "Gateway to the Plains", 86 km from Bogotá. Los Fundadores Park (Botero artwork), Bioparque Los Ocarros (llanero wildlife in semi-freedom: capybaras, caimans, tapirs), Catama and its river spas. Base of operations for the Llano and the Casanare plains. |
| Llanero Wildlife — Safari in Meta | Nature / Wildlife | The savannas of Puerto López and Puerto Gaitán host capybaras in herds of thousands, caimans, anacondas, herons, jabiru storks and toninas (river dolphins) in the Meta and Orinoco rivers. Dawn photographic safari by boat or jeep across the flooded savanna. |
| Puerto López — The Navel of Colombia | Nature / City | Puerto López, 100 km from Villavicencio, is at Colombia's exact geographic center. The Obelisk of the Navel of Colombia, the Meta River with toninas and the Tigre y Palmera park are its attractions. |
| Caño Cristales Off-Season — Meta Rivers | Adventure / Nature | Outside the color season (December–May), the Sierra de La Macarena offers waterfalls, crystal-clear blue pools, caves and jungle hiking. Less crowded and with lower prices than peak season. |
Typical Cuisine
The cuisine of Meta is pure llanero. Llanero mamona (veal slowly roasted on a wooden stick over live coals for 4-6 hours) is the department's emblematic dish. Smoked capybara, shredded capybara with hogao, fried cachama with patacón and yuca, llanero rice with dried meat and cold panela guarapo are must-tries in Villavicencio. Llanero rib broth with criolla potato is the breakfast of savanna cooks.
Adventure and Outdoor Activities
The Caño Cristales tour (only in season June–November, with mandatory PNN guide) is the most sought-after natural adventure in Colombia. Rafting on the Ariari River (Class III–IV rapids near Villavicencio), llanero wildlife photo safari in Puerto López, paragliding over the hills of Villavicencio, coleo in the coleo arena and kayaking on the Meta River complete the offering.
