Tourism guide to Córdoba: Montería, Ciénaga Grande de Lorica, San Bernardo del Viento, Isla Fuerte, Córdoba Caribbean beaches and coastal cuisine.

Tourism in Córdoba — Montería, Ciénaga Grande and Zenú Culture

Córdoba is a Colombian Caribbean department of cattle-raising savannas, mighty rivers and an Afro-Colombian and Zenú indigenous cultural identity that distinguishes it from the rest of the coast. Its capital, Montería, is a cattle town on the banks of the Sinú River —the second most important river in Colombia— with a lively riverfront boardwalk, top-notch coastal cuisine and a deep-rooted vallenato and porro culture.

Tourism in Córdoba is divided between the appeal of the Sinú River and its marshes (habitat of the critically endangered Antillean manatee), the Caribbean coastline with virgin beaches in San Bernardo del Viento and Isla Fuerte, the Zenú culture of San Andrés de Sotavento (capital of caña flecha craftsmanship, the vueltiao hat symbol of Colombia) and ecotourism in the Ciénaga Grande de Lorica. The department has 30 municipalities.

Typical Cuisine

Córdoba's cuisine is coastal and riverine. Mote de queso (yam soup with coastal cheese and hogao) is the most emblematic dish of the Sinú region. Bocachico sancocho, mullet rice (with river fish), arepa de huevo, butifarra (Sinuan pork sausage), coconut enyucado (sweet yuca cake) and caballito (artisanal sugarcane liquor from Tierralta) are typical. Beef from Córdoba's ranches is recognized as the best in the country.

Adventure and Outdoor Activities

Snorkeling and diving on the coral reefs of Isla Fuerte (among the best in the Colombian Caribbean) is the most sought-after adventure. Manatee watching in the Ciénaga de Lorica, kayaking through the Sinú River branches, water bird watching in the lower Sinú wetlands and excursions to the Zenú reserves to learn about caña flecha craftsmanship complete the offering.

How to Get There
