The department of Cesar is the birthplace of vallenato, Colombia's most representative musical genre, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Valledupar, its capital, is the mecca of vallenato and every year in April–May celebrates the Vallenato Legend Festival, the most important musical event in the country. Beyond music, Cesar offers the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta on its southern slope, river resorts like Hurtado and Guatapurí, and the cultural richness of the Arhuaco, Kogui and Wiwa peoples of the Sierra.
