Tourism in Cesar — Vallenato Festival and Sierra Nevada
Tourism guide to Cesar: Valledupar, UNESCO Vallenato Festival, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Ciudad Perdida, Manaure, vallenato cuisine and how to get there.
Cesar is the birthplace of vallenato, the musical genre that UNESCO declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015. Its capital, Valledupar, is considered the world capital of vallenato: the four airs —paseo, merengue, son and puya— were born in the towns of the Valle del Cacique Upar, between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá. The Vallenato Legend Festival (April–May) turns Valledupar into Colombia's musical center for four days.
Beyond vallenato, Cesar offers nature tourism in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (shared with Magdalena and La Guajira), with the mythical Ciudad Perdida (Teyuna) —the largest pre-Hispanic city in Colombia— accessible via a 4-6 day trek from Santa Marta. The department has 25 municipalities and a unique coastal and inland identity, with towns like Manaure, La Paz, El Copey and Agustín Codazzi.
Main Tourist Attractions
| Attraction | Type | Description |
| Vallenato Legend Festival | Culture / Festival | The most important music festival in Colombia (April–May). Accordion, caja, guacharaca and singing competition at the Vallenato Legend Park. Senior, Professional, Amateur and Children's Vallenato King categories. Over 400,000 attendees in four days. |
| Vallenato Legend Park | Culture / City | Vallenato theme park in Valledupar. Sculptures of Carlos Vives, Carlos Huertas (the first vallenato king), accordion sculpture and the donkey that carried the instruments. Venue for the festival and vallenato shows year-round. |
| Hurtado Spa and Guatapurí River | Nature / Recreation | The Guatapurí River is Valledupar's natural swimming spot: crystal-clear waters from the Sierra Nevada in the heart of the tropics. The Hurtado spa (12 km away) is the most popular. The water flows cold and transparent from the snow-capped peaks at 500 meters above sea level. |
| Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta | High Mountain / Nature | The highest coastal mountain in the world (Pico Simón Bolívar and Pico Cristóbal Colón, 5,775 meters above sea level). From Cesar you access the eastern side, with less tourism and more authenticity than from Santa Marta. |
| Manaure Balcón del Cesar | Nature / Landscape | Mountain town at 1,500 meters above sea level with panoramic views of the Valle del Cacique Upar and the plains. Cool climate, productive in coffee, panela and cold-climate fruits. Natural viewpoints over Cesar. |
| Los Besotes — Bird Reserve | Ecotourism / Birds | Private nature reserve near Valledupar with over 200 species of dry Caribbean forest birds. One of the best birdwatching locations in northern Colombia. |
Typical Cuisine
Vallenato cuisine is both coastal and inland. Goat sancocho (goat stew in spicy broth) is the most typical dish of Valledupar. Mullet rice (with fish from the Cesar River), arepa e'huevo (fried, with egg), bollo limpio (corn dough cooked in a leaf), mote de queso (yam soup with coastal cheese) and white corn chicha are classics. At the Valledupar market, corozo, mango and soursop juices are essential.
Adventure and Outdoor Activities
The trek to Ciudad Perdida (4-6 days from Santa Marta, also accessible from Cesar via Palomino) is the most epic adventure in the Colombian Caribbean. Tubing on the Guatapurí River, hiking in the Sierra Nevada from the Cesar side, bird watching at Los Besotes and excursions to mountain towns (Manaure, La Paz) complete the offering.
How to Get There
Valledupar has Alfonso López Pumarejo Airport (VUP) with flights from Bogotá (1 hour 20 minutes), Medellín (1 hour 20 minutes) and Barranquilla (40 minutes).
