The Vallenato Legend Festival is the most important celebration of vallenato music, a rhythm declared UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015. It takes place each year in Valledupar, capital of the Cesar department, during the last week of April. For five days, the "World Capital of Vallenato" becomes the epicenter of Colombian music with accordion, caja (drum), and guacharaca competitions, open-air concerts, and a pilgrimage of musicians, fans, and tourists from around the world.
The festival was founded in 1968 by journalist and politician Alfonso López Michelsen, folklorist Consuelo Araújonoguera (known as La Cacica), and writer Gabriel García Márquez, among others. Its goal was to preserve and promote authentic vallenato in the face of commercialization. Today it is the most-attended music event in Colombia outside the Barranquilla Carnival, with over 400,000 attendees per edition.
Dates and Duration
The festival lasts five days during the last week of April, generally from Wednesday to Sunday. Activities begin with the lighting of the torch and culminate with the crowning of the Vallenato King at Alfonso López Square.

The Four Rhythms of Vallenato
Vallenato consists of four rhythms or "aires": paseo (the most popular and danceable), merengue (fast and joyful), son (melancholic and rhythmic), and puya (the fastest and most virtuosic, demanding great accordion skill). Contestants must master all four in the elimination rounds.
How to Get to Valledupar
Valledupar has the Alfonso López Pumarejo Airport (VUP) with direct flights from Bogotá (1:20 h), Medellín (1:30 h), and Barranquilla (40 min). Flights during the festival sell out weeks in advance — book 2 months ahead. By bus from Barranquilla, it takes 4 hours via the Caribbean Trunk Road.
Where to Stay
Valledupar has limited hotel capacity for the festival's volume. Most accommodation is in downtown and El Centro neighborhood. During the festival, many families rent out rooms. Barranquilla and Santa Marta work as alternative bases (4 h and 3 h away respectively) for those who can't find lodging.

- Tickets for the Vallenato Legend Park sell out fast — buy on the official website in advance.
- Concerts at Alfonso López Square are free and at night — the atmosphere is as good as the paid venue.
- Valledupar is extremely hot in April: 95–104 °F (35–40 °C). Light clothing, sunscreen, and water are essential.
- Try sancocho de guandú and green mango jelly at street stalls.
