Tourism in Atlántico — Barranquilla Carnival and the Caribbean

Atlántico is the Colombian Caribbean department where the Barranquilla Carnival turns every February into Colombia's most massive celebration: four days of parades, music, costumes and tradition, declared UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2003. Barranquilla, its capital, is Colombia's fourth-largest city and the country's main seaport on the Magdalena River, with a Caribbean, cosmopolitan and industrial identity that sets it apart from other Colombian cities.

Beyond the carnival, Atlántico offers the charm of the Magdalena River and its marshes (habitat of manatees and caimans), the historic Puerto Colombia pier, the artisans of Usiacurí, the confluence of the Magdalena with the Caribbean at Bocas de Ceniza and unparalleled coastal cuisine. The department has 23 municipalities and receives over 2 million tourists per year, peaking during the four days of Carnival.

La Troja and the Barranquillita market concentrate the best popular food. Ron Caribe and Águila beer are emblematic drinks.

Manatee and caiman spotting in the marshes of the Magdalena complex is the most valuable ecotourism activity. Kitesurfing and surfing in Salgar (beach with constant winds), boat tour through Bocas de Ceniza, cycling along the riverfront boardwalk and food tourism at the Barranquillita market complete the offering.
