Tourism in Amazonas — Jungle and Amazon River
Tourism guide to Amazonas: Leticia, Isla de los Micos, Lake Tarapoto, Tikuna indigenous communities, Amazon rainforest and how to get there.
Amazonas is the southernmost department of Colombia and one of the most extraordinary nature destinations on the planet. Its capital, Leticia, is the only Colombian city on the banks of the Amazon River and the gateway to the world's largest tropical rainforest. The department is 100% Amazon jungle: it has no roads connecting it to the rest of Colombia, so it is only accessible by air or river, guaranteeing an unparalleled experience of isolation and nature.
Amazonas shares a triple border with Peru and Brazil, making Leticia a multicultural destination with Colombian, Peruvian and Brazilian influences. The department is home to indigenous Tikuna, Uitoto, Yagua and Cocama communities that keep their traditions alive. With 109,665 km² of virgin jungle, black and white rivers, and a biodiversity that includes pink river dolphins (bufeos), manatees, jaguars and thousands of bird species, Amazonas is a paradise for scientific and adventure ecotourism.

Typical Cuisine
Amazon cuisine is unique in Colombia. Pirarucú (the largest freshwater fish in the world, up to 3 meters) is prepared fried, in ceviche or smoked. Grilled tucunaré, steamed bocachico in bijao leaves and caribe soup (piranha) are essential dishes. Casabe (gluten-free bitter cassava bread) is the traditional indigenous bread. Exotic Amazon fruits: copoazú, arazá, cocona, camu-camu and asaí (açaí). Yuca masato is the ceremonial Tikuna drink.
Adventure and Outdoor Activities
Kayaking on blackwater rivers through the jungle is the most immersive activity. Sport fishing for pirarucú and tucunaré in the Amazon várzea is unique in Colombia. Hiking in virgin jungle with indigenous guides, pink dolphin spotting by kayak, canopy through the treetops and the Amazon survival tour (shelter building, water filtering, medicinal plants) are experiences without equal in the country.
How to Get There
Leticia has Alfredo Vásquez Cobo Airport (LET) with daily flights from Bogotá (2 hours) on Avianca, Latam and Satena. There is no land connection to the rest of Colombia.
