Medellín Book and Culture Festival
Everything about the Medellín Book and Culture Festival: dates, free events, featured authors, venue, and how to participate in Colombia's largest literary festival.
The Medellín Book and Culture Festival is the largest and most democratic literary and cultural festival in Colombia. It takes place each year for ten days in September with free entry to most events: conferences with international authors, writing workshops, concerts, art exhibitions, street theater, and children's activities. With over 600,000 attendees per edition, it is one of the most visited book festivals in Latin America.
Launched in 2006 by the Medellín city government as a commitment to democratize access to culture and reading, its philosophy is to take books outside of bookstores and libraries: venues include parks, plazas, hospitals, prisons, and working-class neighborhoods. World-class authors such as Mario Vargas Llosa, Paulo Coelho, Arturo Pérez-Reverte, and Piedad Bonnett have participated in previous editions.
Dates and Duration
The Book Festival is held for ten days during the last week of September and first week of October. Exact dates vary each year — check the official schedule on the Medellín city government website in advance.

Where to Stay
September is not high season in Medellín — you'll find good prices in El Poblado (premium tourist area), Laureles (residential neighborhood with good dining), and Downtown (central and budget-friendly, near main venues). For events at Parque de los Deseos, the Aranjuez and downtown neighborhoods are most convenient.
