The department of Sucre has a warm and humid climate characteristic of the inland Colombian Caribbean. The department encompasses three large subregions with differentiated microclimates: the savanna to the south and east, the wetlands and the Gulf of Morrosquillo to the north, and the Montes de María to the west with higher altitude and vegetation. The La Mojana wetland, in the southeast of the department, experiences massive seasonal floods that create a temporary aquatic landscape, similar to the flooded plains.
