Tourism guide to Cauca: Popayán the White City, San Agustín UNESCO, Tierradentro UNESCO, Puracé, Silvia and Holy Week in the colonial city.

Tourism in Cauca — Popayán, San Agustín and Tierradentro

Cauca is the department richest in archaeological heritage in Colombia, with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the San Agustín Archaeological Park (1995), the largest pre-Hispanic necropolis in the Americas with over 500 monolithic sculptures up to 4 meters tall; and the Tierradentro Archaeological Park (1995), with painted underground tombs (hypogea) of the pre-Hispanic Agustinian culture. Its capital, Popayán, is called "The White City" for its whitewashed colonial buildings and is home to the most important Holy Week in Colombia.

The department has 42 municipalities and a unique cultural diversity: the indigenous market of Silvia (Guambianos/Misak), the Puracé volcano with hot springs and colorful lagoons, the humid Pacific jungle of the Cauca coast and the Afro-Colombian towns of the north. Cauca combines archaeology, volcanic nature, colonial cuisine and living indigenous tradition in a territory of 29,308 km².
