Tourism in Caldas — Manizales Fair and Coffee Region
Tourism guide to Caldas: Manizales, Nevado del Ruiz, UNESCO Coffee Cultural Landscape, Salamina, Riosucio and Manizales Fair.
Caldas is the mountainous heart of the Colombian Coffee Region, a department of Andean volcanoes, coffee plantations on impossible slopes and republican coffee architecture that forms part of the Coffee Cultural Landscape, UNESCO World Heritage since 2011. Its capital, Manizales, sits at 2,153 meters above sea level in the Central Cordillera, with a direct view of the Nevado del Ruiz (5,321 meters) —the highest active volcano in Colombia— and has been called "The City of Open Doors" for its university and cultural tradition.
The department has 27 municipalities with a deep coffee identity: Salamina (National Heritage of Colombia and UNESCO candidate), Aguadas, Pácora and Riosucio preserve the bahareque architecture painted in vivid colors that defines the Coffee Region. The Manizales Fair (January) with its International Coffee Pageant and Bullfighting Festival at La Macarena is the most important event of the year. Caldas receives over 1.5 million tourists annually.
Main Tourist Attractions
| Attraction | Type | Description |
| Nevado del Ruiz and Los Nevados National Park | High Mountain / Adventure | Active volcano at 5,321 meters above sea level, accessible by road to the refuge at 4,800 meters. Los Nevados National Park (shared with Risaralda, Quindío and Tolima) offers trekking through glaciers, volcanic lakes and páramos. The 1985 eruption that destroyed Armero remains a historical reference. |
| Salamina | Heritage / Architecture | Declared National Historical Heritage. Century-old bahareque architecture painted in pastel colors, carved wooden balconies, Immaculate Conception church and cobblestone streets. UNESCO World Heritage candidate. |
| Coffee Farms of the Region | Agrotourism / Culture | Dozens of farms in Chinchiná, Villamaría and southern Caldas offer the complete coffee tour: planting, harvesting, processing, drying, roasting and tasting. Accommodation in coffee cabins with views of volcanoes. |
| Manizales — Cable Car and Lookout | City / Adventure | The Manizales Cable Car (1928) is the oldest cargo aerial cableway in Latin America, now a tourist attraction. Chipre Lookout and the cable car to the Cable neighborhood offer panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks and the city. |
| Riosucio and Devil's Carnival | Culture / Festivity | Town with Embera indigenous and settler identity in northern Caldas. The Devil's Carnival (every two years, odd January) is one of the most original festivities in Colombia: the town "judges" the devil in a mock trial with costumes, coplas and chicha. |
| Aguadas | Heritage Town / Crafts | Famous for aguadeño hats (variant of the Caldas vueltiao hat). Preserved republican architecture, lookout and aguadeño hat festival in August. |
| Santa Rosa de Cabal Hot Springs | Wellness / Nature | The most popular hot springs in the Coffee Region (shared with Risaralda). Hot water pools at 95°C amid misty jungle, waterfalls and pleasant climate. |
Typical Cuisine
Caldas gastronomy is classic coffee region paisa cooking. The bandeja paisa (beans, pork rind, ground beef, chorizo, blood sausage, arepa, rice, avocado) is the emblematic dish. River trout at Villamaría restaurants, free-range hen sancocho, chócolo arepas with quesillo, Manizales marzipan and high-altitude coffee from southern Caldas are must-tries. In Manizales, San José Market and La Enea gallery are the popular gastronomic centers.
Adventure and Outdoor Activities
Trekking to Nevado del Ruiz (up to 4,800 meters by paved road, then a hike to the crater) is the most accessible high-mountain adventure in Colombia. Paragliding over Manizales from Sancancio hill, rafting on the Chinchiná River, mountain biking between Manizales and the Nevado, hiking in cloud forest in Los Nevados and canopy in Villamaría complete the adventure offering.
How to Get There
Manizales has La Nubia Airport (MZL), one of the most challenging in Colombia due to its short hillside runway (flights suspended in fog). Flights from Bogotá (40 minutes) and Medellín (30 minutes). By land: from Bogotá 7 hours via the Autopista del Café; from Medellín 4 hours. Alternative: fly to El Edén Airport in Armenia (AXM) or José María Córdova in Medellín (MDE) and take a bus to Manizales (2-3 hours).
Where to Stay
In Manizales: 3-4 star hotels downtown and in Cable, hostels in La Enea neighborhood. On coffee farms: book directly with a minimum of 2 nights. In Salamina: heritage lodges with original architecture. For Nevado: refuge inside Los Nevados National Park (reserve with National Parks months in advance).
